Theraphosa apophysis (Goliath Pinkfoot Tarantula)
Origin: Venezuela and Brazil, South America.
Size: 10–11 inches (25–28 cm) leg span, one of the largest tarantulas in the world.
Lifespan: Females 15–20 years, males 3–4 years.
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and opportunistic burrower; often creates shallow burrows or uses natural shelters.
Appearance: A massive, heavy-bodied tarantula with a reddish-brown base color, pinkish tarsal pads (“pink feet”), and long reddish hairs that give it a more vibrant look than other Theraphosa species. Spiderlings show striking pink coloration.
Temperament: Defensive and skittish; quick to flick urticating hairs and adopt a threat posture if disturbed. Best appreciated as a display tarantula.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Very large terrestrial setup with lots of floor space, a sturdy hide, and 6–8 inches of substrate for digging.
Substrate: Moisture-retentive soil, coconut fiber, or a soil/peat mix. Must remain damp to replicate rainforest conditions.
Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C).
Humidity: 80–90%, with consistently moist substrate and a large shallow water dish. Good ventilation is important to avoid mold.
Diet: Large insects such as crickets, roaches, locusts, and occasional pinkie mice (optional, not necessary). Feed juveniles more often.
