Phormictopus sp. “Dominican Purple” – Dominican Purple Tarantula
Origin: Native to the Dominican Republic (Caribbean).
Size: Large terrestrial tarantula, 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females: 15–20 years Males: 3–5 years
Lifestyle: Terrestrial, opportunistic burrower.
Known for its bold presence and heavy feeding response.
Appearance: Striking dark brown to black base color with a strong purple iridescent sheen across legs and carapace under light.
The “purple shine” makes this species especially sought after.
Temperament: Generally bold and defensive compared to many New World species.
Will readily throw threat postures and may use urticating hairs.
Considered a species best suited for intermediate to advanced keepers.
Care & Habitat:
Comes from a tropical Caribbean climate.
Prefers warmth, moderate humidity, and space to roam or burrow.
Enclosure:
Large terrestrial setup with at least 6–8 inches of floor space.
Provide a hide and at least 5–6 inches of substrate for digging.
Substrate:
Moist but well-draining substrate (coco fiber/soil mix).
Maintain 70–80% humidity with good ventilation.
Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C).
Interesting Note:
Phormictopus species are known for their fast growth rates and voracious appetites.
“Dominican Purple” is one of the most colorful representatives of the genus.
