Pamphobeteus platyomma (Brazilian Pink Bloom Tarantula)
Origin: Brazil, South America.
Size: 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females 12–15 years, males 3–4 years.
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and opportunistic burrower; may create shallow burrows or adopt natural hides, often covering the area with webbing.
Appearance: Large and robust with a dark brown to black base color highlighted by pinkish to purplish hairs on the abdomen and legs, giving it the “pink bloom” effect. Juveniles display more vivid contrasting patterns that fade with maturity.
Temperament: Generally defensive and skittish. Will readily flick urticating hairs if disturbed. Best appreciated as a display species.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Spacious terrestrial setup with plenty of floor space, a large hide, and 5–6 inches of substrate for digging.
Substrate: Moisture-retentive soil, coconut fiber, or a soil mix that holds humidity.
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C).
Humidity: 70–80%, with a shallow water dish and occasional misting.
Diet: Crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other large feeder insects weekly; juveniles more often.
