Pamphobeteus nigricolor (Colombian Giant Tarantula)
Origin: Colombia, South America.
Size: 8–9 inches (20–23 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females 12–15 years, males 3–4 years.
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and opportunistic burrower; may dig shallow burrows or use hides, often covering the area in webbing.
Appearance: A massive, heavy-bodied species with a dark, almost black base color. Mature females show subtle purple to reddish highlights on the carapace and legs, while juveniles are patterned with brighter markings that fade with age.
Temperament: Generally skittish and defensive. Known to readily flick urticating hairs when disturbed. Not recommended for handling.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Large terrestrial setup with plenty of floor space, a sturdy hide, and 5–6 inches of substrate for digging.
Substrate: Moisture-retentive soil, coconut fiber, or a soil mix.
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C).
Humidity: 70–80%, with a large shallow water dish and occasional misting.
Diet: Crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other large feeder insects weekly; juveniles more often.
