Origin: Brazil, South America (Bahia region).
Size: 7–9 inches (18–23 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females 12–15 years, males 3–4 years.
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and opportunistic burrower; often stays near its hide or entrance of a burrow.
Appearance: A massive, heavy-bodied tarantula with dark coloration and reddish to scarlet hairs on the legs and abdomen, giving it a bold, fiery appearance.
Temperament: Generally defensive and known to kick urticating hairs readily when disturbed. Not recommended for handling, but hardy and impressive as a display species.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Large terrestrial setup with plenty of floor space, a sturdy hide, and 5–6 inches of substrate for digging.
Substrate: Soil, coconut fiber, or a soil mix that holds humidity well.
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C).
Humidity: 70–80%, with a shallow water dish and occasional misting.
Diet: Large insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms weekly; juveniles more often.
