Idiothele mira (Blue-Foot Baboon Tarantula)
Origin: South Africa.
Size: 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females 10–12 years, males 3–4 years.
Lifestyle: Fossorial trapdoor tarantula; constructs silk-lined burrows with a camouflaged trapdoor.
Appearance: Brown to tan body with a golden carapace and striking metallic blue coloring on the front legs and feet.
Temperament: Secretive and defensive; spends most of its time hidden in its burrow and ambushes prey from its trapdoor. Not recommended for handling.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Fossorial setup with 6–8 inches of compact substrate for burrow building. Provide leaf litter or cork pieces to help it construct its trapdoor.
Substrate: Soil, coconut fiber, or a soil/sand mix that supports stable burrows.
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C).
Humidity: 60–70%, with a water dish and occasional light misting. Keep most of the enclosure slightly dry.
Diet: Crickets, roaches, and other feeder insects weekly; juveniles more often.
