Heteropoda pingtungensis (Pingtung Huntsman)

Origin: Native to Taiwan (and nearby regions).

Size: Leg span is reported around 2 – 3 inches (5 – 8 cm) for juvenile/hand-sized specimens as seen in trade listings.

Lifespan: There is no reliable published data on the exact lifespan for this species in captivity, but as a huntsman spider it may live several years under proper care (e.g., 3–5 years or more depending on sex and conditions).

Lifestyle: Terrestrial/semi-arboreal huntsman: likely spends time on vertical or horizontal surfaces rather than deep burrowing.

Fast and agile predator, typical of the family Sparassidae.

Appearance: Flat body shape with broad leg span; coloration and detailed patterning are not extensively documented in the hobby.

Identified taxonomically in Taiwan in 2006.

Generally light-to-medium brown tones, with huntsman-type morphology.

Temperament: Typical huntsman behaviour: quick movement, skittish when disturbed.

Not generally considered highly aggressive to humans, but can bite if threatened or mishandled (as with many huntsman species).

Because detailed hobby experience is limited, assume cautious handling and minimal disturbance.

Care & Habitat

Originates from subtropical/tropical climates (Taiwan).

Needs warm, moderately humid environment with hiding places and climbing surfaces.

Enclosure

Provide a terrarium with good floor area and some vertical surfaces or horizontal ledges for climbing.

A size of at least 30 × 20 × 20 cm (or larger) is recommended for an adult (adjust as specimen grows).

Secure, escape-proof lid is essential (huntsman spiders are fast and good climbers).

Provide hides (bark, cork, rock ledges) and moderate foliage or substrate texture for retreat.

Substrate

A loose, well-draining substrate such as coco fibre, peat soil mix, or forest floor litter.

Depth ~2-3 cm is sufficient (does not appear to be a deep burrowing species).

Maintain moderate humidity—spray lightly as needed to keep 60-70% relative humidity, but avoid overly soggy conditions.

Note: Because the Pingtung Huntsman is less common in the arachnid hobby, much of the care recommendations above are adapted from general huntsman spider husbandry. If you acquire one, monitor behaviour, adjust to its individual needs, and ensure safe handling practices.
