Origin: Colombia, South America.
Size: 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females 12–15 years, males 3–4 years.
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and opportunistic burrower; often stays near its retreat but may expand burrows and cover the area with webbing.
Appearance: A massive tarantula with a dark body covered in long reddish setae and shimmering blue highlights on the legs and carapace, giving it a beautiful “blue bloom” effect.
Temperament: Skittish and defensive. Known to flick urticating hairs readily when disturbed. Best appreciated as a display tarantula.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Large terrestrial setup with 5–6 inches of substrate, floor space, and a sturdy hide.
Substrate: Moisture-retentive soil, coconut fiber, or a soil mix that holds burrows.
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C).
Humidity: 70–80%, with a shallow water dish and occasional misting.
Diet: Crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other large feeder insects weekly; juveniles more often.
