Hapalopus formosus (Pumpkin Patch Tarantula)

Origin: Colombia, South America.

Size: 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) leg span.

Lifespan: Females 8–10 years, males 3–4 years.

Lifestyle: Terrestrial, often semi-fossorial, building shallow burrows and web tunnels.

Appearance: A small but colorful species with bright orange “pumpkin-like” markings across the abdomen and dark contrasting legs.

Temperament: Generally skittish but not overly defensive. Quick movements make it best as a display species rather than for handling.

Care & Habitat:

Enclosure: Terrestrial setup with floor space, hides, and at least 3–4 inches of substrate for shallow burrowing.

Substrate: Coconut fiber, topsoil, or a soil mix that holds some humidity.

Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).

Humidity: 65–75%, with a water dish and occasional light misting.

Diet: Appropriately sized crickets, roaches, or mealworms once or twice per week; juveniles feed more often.
