Phormingochilus sp. 'Sabah Red' - aka Sabah Red Bat Eater and Sabah Red Earth Tiger
Origin: Native to Sabah, Borneo (Malaysia).
Size: Large Old World arboreal/fossorial hybrid species, reaching 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) leg span.
Appearance: Known for its deep reddish to copper coloration on the carapace and legs.
Abdomen and femurs often show darker tones, giving a striking contrast.
A visually stunning member of the Ornithoctoninae subfamily.
Temperament & Behavior: Defensive and very fast – typical Old World behavior.
Can deliver a medically significant bite (potent venom).
Semi-arboreal tendencies: often creates deep burrows but also webs heavily around vertical structures.
Care in Captivity:
Enclosure: Provide both height and depth. A tall terrestrial/arboreal hybrid enclosure works best, with cork bark for climbing and deep substrate for burrowing.
Substrate: Moist, 5–7 inches deep (coco fiber/soil mix).
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C).
Humidity: 70–80%, with good ventilation.
Diet: Roaches, crickets, locusts, and other large feeders.
Interesting Note:
Rare in the hobby and highly prized for its intense red coloration.
Closely related to other “Earth Tiger” tarantulas of Southeast Asia, which are known for their complex webbing and burrowing behaviors.
