Origin: Mexico, Central America (Belize, Guatemala).
Size: 5–6.5 inches (13–16 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females 15–20 years, males 4–6 years.
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and fossorial, often creating burrows but may also adopt natural hides.
Appearance: Velvety black body with striking red hairs covering the abdomen, giving it a bold contrast.
Temperament: Generally calm but can flick urticating hairs when threatened. A hardy beginner-friendly species, though handling is still discouraged.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Terrestrial setup with hides and 5–6 inches of substrate for burrowing.
Substrate: Coconut fiber, topsoil, or soil mix that holds humidity.
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).
Humidity: 65–75%, with a water dish and occasional light misting.
Diet: Crickets, roaches, and mealworms weekly; juveniles more often.
