Poecilotheria ornata – Fringed Ornamental

Origin: Sri Lanka, inhabiting old-growth forests.


Size: One of the largest arboreal tarantulas, reaching 7–10 inches (18–25 cm) leg span.


Lifespan: Females: 12–15 years Males: 3–4 years


Lifestyle: Arboreal, living in tree hollows and crevices.

Highly secretive but active hunters at night.


Appearance: Striking greenish-gold carapace with bold black and white markings.

Abdomen patterned with yellows, greens, and blacks.

Underside of legs shows vivid yellow and black bands—a warning display when threatened.


Temperament: Fast, defensive, and potent venomous bite (Old World species).

Not suitable for beginners.

Prefers retreating into hides but can stand its ground if provoked.


Care & Habitat:

Tropical forest dweller; requires warm, humid conditions.


Enclosure:

Tall arboreal enclosure with vertical cork bark tubes, plants, or logs for climbing.

Secure lid—this species is extremely fast.


Substrate:

Moist substrate (coco fiber/soil mix) 2–4 inches deep.

Maintain 75–82°F (24–28°C) and 70–80% humidity with good ventilation.


Interesting Note:

Known as the Fringed Ornamental due to the leg patterning.

One of the largest and most striking members of the Poecilotheria genus.

Sometimes observed communally in the wild, though risky in captivity.
