Brachypelma hamorii (Mexican Red Knee Tarantula)
Origin: Mexico — particularly along the Pacific coast in Colima and Guerrero.
Size: 5–6 inches (13–15 cm) leg span.
Lifespan: Females 20–25 years, males 5–7 years.
Lifestyle: Terrestrial and opportunistic burrower; may dig shallow burrows or use natural hides.
Appearance: One of the most iconic tarantulas in the hobby, with a dark black body, orange-red knee joints, and light carapace edging. Often confused with B. smithi but with subtle differences in leg banding and carapace tone.
Temperament: Docile, calm, and slow-moving. Known as one of the best beginner tarantulas, though it may flick urticating hairs if disturbed.
Care & Habitat:
Enclosure: Terrestrial setup with floor space, a hide, and 4–5 inches of substrate for burrowing.
Substrate: Coconut fiber, topsoil, or soil mix kept mostly dry with a slightly moist area.
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).
Humidity: 60–70%, with a shallow water dish; avoid excessive moisture.
Diet: Crickets, roaches, and mealworms weekly; juveniles more often.
